When Cal let the rabbit go he thought to himself, "...I could see them dancing with their spear and howling with bloodthirsty cries and I wondered why some people were so mean and why they'd want to hurt someone.(64 West)" This passage is important because it shows how caring Cal is. this will carry him throughout the book and even bring him down. The rabbit relates to Gretchen because she also was getting physically abused and Cal does not know why people can be so mean and careless towards others.
